ATLANTIC CHRISTMASFEATURING by Wayne Tucker (December, 2009)
Thanks to enhanced sound quality, Nolan sounds great as he croons classics like White Christmas and Silver Bells while backed by a fine country band which sounds very Christmasy indeed. The album also features the recording debut of Bonnie Lou, Dick's five-year-old daughter. She adds her cherubic child's voice to classics like Jingle Bells and I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, and for a rare treat she duets with dad on Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. This album laid the foundation for Bonnie Lou's recording career and she went on to become a local childhood sensation releasing three albums for RCA while still in her pre-teens. Hopefully we'll hear those on CD someday too! Another highlight of Atlantic Christmas is Blue at Christmas which was penned by the record's producer, Ben Weatherby. Ben was well known as a prolific record producer through the 1960s who also recorded a few albums of his own. However, on this spirited country tune Weatherby's song-writing skills are evident right from the opening "You've never had the blues 'til you've been blue at Christmas." This re-release of Atlantic Christmas sounds terrific!. Unfortunately the liner notes simply repeat the notes from 1967 and say nothing about the enhancement of sound quality. But it certainly appears that the album has been remastered and with full stereo separation this album makes for a superior listening experience. Thankfully the record also includes two previously unreleased bonus tracks - a slower more countrified version of Silver Bells and a rock version of Frosty the Snowman.
