Ryan turns fancy to Cape St. Mary’s

STEPHEN COOKE

For a real blast of Rock nostalgia, Sony/BMG has stepped up to the plate with The Best of Dick Nolan (Sony/BMG); collecting 17 tracks personally selected by the Newfoundland country legend before his death in December.

Like a Corner Brook Stompin’ Tom Connors, Nolan sang songs about his home with a heavy dose of humour in songs like Aunt Martha’s Sheep and Thank God We’re Surrounded By Water, in a wry baritone. Songs like Piece of Bologna and Old Newfie Outhouse might seem a bit cornball now, but there’s keen satire on Home Again This Year and wistful sentiment on Maritime Farewell which show there was more than one side to the singer.
