CHRISTMAS MORN IN
NEWFOUNDLAND . . .
THE BEST OF DICK NOLAN Early in 1972 I spoke with my friend, Ron McNeil of Crawford Music Ltd. and asked if he would help me get a recording contract for my daughter Bonnie Lou. He arranged for Jack Feeney of RCA Records to come to St. John’s to listen to Bonnie Lou. Mr. Feeney liked what he heard and gave her a contract when she was just ten years old. She went on to record three albums for RCA. During his visit Mr. Feeney, knowing that I was a musician asked me if I had a recording contract. I told him that I didn’t but that I used to record with Arc Records. I auditioned a couple of songs for him which he liked so he signed me with RCA too. We then recorded the long playing album Fisherman’s Boy which was a great success selling more than 100,000 copies and going platinum. My next two albums for RCA were also successful selling more that 50,000 copies and going gold. Another two albums followed plus a greatest hits package for a total of six on the RCA label. The success of these recordings opened many doors for me. I appeared at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and on national television programs: The Tommy Hunter Show, Stompin’ Tom’s Canada, the Elwood Glover Show, and the Country Time Show featuring Myrna Lorrie. I also hosted my own weekly television series in Newfoundland which ran for 13 weeks. My recordings with RCA lead to a Juno Award nomination, a song writing award from BMI for co-writing Aunt Martha’s Sheep, and the 1973 Male Performer of the Year Award for Newfoundland. This CD presents the best of my RCA recordings from this era. I hope you enjoy the selections which have been remastered from the original vinyl recordings and are now available for the first time on CD. I thank my wife Marie, for her love and support through the years, and Wayne Tucker for his help in making this CD happen. ---- Dick Nolan, 2005 Special Thanks to: Wayne Tucker, Barry Haugen, Susan Lute, Steve Simon, Tom Chaggaris, and Phil Demetro.
